Train Your Dog To Wear A Muzzle

A muzzle can be an effective, human tool for managing your dog’s behavior. There are many situations in which your dog may be required to wear a muzzle. Muzzles may be used as a temporary way of managing problem behavior, until a training plan can be developed. There are two types of muzzles: nylon (also referred to as the "groomer's muzzle") and basket. Nylon muzzle  looks more comfortable but they are only appropriate for short periods and under close supervision because your dog will not be able to drink or regulate it's temperature by panting. The best type of muzzle to purchase is a basket muzzle which has holes through which you can feed treats and the dog has enough space to pant.

To train your dog to wear the muzzle:

Attach the muzzle to the dog's collar and for a few minutes each day, let it hang off their collar for few days. Reward him for wearing the muzzle on the collar. Next, place a little peanut butter or some soft dog food at the end of the muzzle. Fit the muzzle over the snout to try it out for few minutes. This allows your dog to access the treat and see the muzzle as a positive experience. Praise should be incorporated for faster training. Repeat the previous step several times a day for a few days. When he seems comfortable with having his nose inside the muzzle, repeat the process, but fasten the muzzle on his head while licking off the treat. Praise is necessary here as well.
