Basic Obedience Puppy Training

Untrained adolescent and adult dogs can become easily distracted by their environment, which is why it’s important to work on coming when called, leash-pulling and impulse-control exercises like “stay,” “leave it” and “sit.” Basic commands not only teach helpful skills, they reinforce your role as your dog's leader. Using treats to lure your dog into the correct position or place, and then to reward him for obeying, is one of the easiest and most dog-friendly methods. Start with an easy command in a familiar place with no distractions. Five or ten minutes is plenty to start with, or you can do many mini-training sessions throughout the day. Your puppy's attention span won't last much longer than that. Teach or practice just one basic command at each session to avoid confusing your pup. Use a hand signal each time you give your puppy a command. Praise your puppy excitedly to help him learn that he did something right.

Don't punish your puppy or scold him for doing things wrong. This will confuse him and can spark fear, aggression and behavior problems. Consistently use positive training methods to show him what is expected of him.
